My Name Is Gabito: The Life of Gabriel García Márquez

Illustrated by Raúl Colón

Flagstaff: Rising Moon, 2007

ISBN: 978-0-873-58934-5 | Ages 7–12

An imaginative child, born and raised in Aracataca, Colombia, where a ghost lady rocked their rocking chair and parrots could tell the future, Gabito grows up to be a famous storyteller. The flavor of the work of Garcia Márquez is captured in the offbeat imagery of both the words and the pictures in this charming biography. Beginning with a series of “Can you imagine” sentences to draw readers in, the simple text focuses on childhood experiences described in his memoir. The last paragraph tells reader that the small boy became a world-famous writer; more career details appear in an afterword. Colón’s oil pastels soar across the pages. Fish and people fly. Plenty of white space around the details allows room for the reader’s imagination as well. Tropical colors abound and the phrase can you imagine is repeated in script across some of the more magical images. This was an ALSC Notable, a commended title for the Americás Award, and a Pura Belpré honor book for its illustrations. Like its predecessors, My Name Is Gabriela (Luna Rising, 2005) and My Name Is Celia (Rising Moon, 2004), biographies of Gabriela Mistral and Celia Cruz, this is also available in a bilingual English/Spanish edition.
